Can you believe it is already February? Today starts Black History Month in America and I get to share with you two board books to introduce perhaps the two most famous civil rights activists in America to the youngest kids. It seems like the perfect way to kick off Black History Month. The first book is The Story of Martin Luther King Jr. written by Johnny Ray Moore and illustrated by Amy Wummer.

This book gives a simple introduction to Martin Luther King, Jr. and his life. It talks about segregation and goes into his "I have a dream..." speech. It shows how Dr. King's work began to make changes to the lives of every American with schools that take everyone, restaurants cannot refuse someone because of race and more. It is a sweet and short book and introduction to this amazing man and his life and work. It is perfect for the younger learner to begin to understand Civil Rights and Dr. King.
The illustrations are simple and the font looks like it is handwritten. The book is a clear introduction without many of the full details that will come when the child is older. For more books and activities about Martin Luther King, Jr. see I Am Martin Luther King Jr., Book Review, Teaching Young Children about Martin Luther King, Jr., Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Snack, Martin Luther King, Jr. Getting Ready to Celebrate His Birthday & Him, Martin Luther King Day, Peace Through Love Teachings of Martin Luther King Jr., We Shall Overcome, Mahalia Jackson, Reflections on Martin Luther King Jr., and My Civil Rights/MLK Pinterest Board.

In The Story of Rosa Parks written by Patricia A. Pingry and illustrated by Steven Walker an introduction to "the mother of civil rights" is presented for the youngest of learners. The book begins with her childhood and schooling. It goes to her marriage and then of course the day of the bus and then the bus boycott in Alabama. The end of the book thanks Rosa for her courage.

This book has a similar format to the Martin Luther King book. The pictures are on the majority of the page with the words below them. It simplifies the life of Rosa Parks for our youngest learners to understand and first hear about this brave woman who helped change our world.

I hope you will check out these two great books to teach your young children about two great civil rights leaders. For more on Rosa Parks check out I Am Rosa Parks.
